Obituary

Hsi-Lin Tung, MD FACS, 90, of Manchester died on December 25, 2014 of complications from injuries suffered in a fall three weeks earlier.

He was born in Hong Kong on November 12, 1924 to Tung Chung Wai and Tung (Lo) Wan-Ting, and had eleven siblings. His father was the founder of the former Dao Heng Bank in Hong Kong. Dr. Tung immigrated to the United States in 1949 and became a citizen through a special petition from Connecticut U.S. Senator Prescott Bush, father of President George H.W. Bush.

Dr. Tung graduated from Hsiang-Ya Medical College (Yale-in-China Medical School) in Changsha, China. He received his surgical training in the general surgery residency program at Yale. He moved to Manchester to begin his surgical practice in 1956.

Dr. Tung practiced general and thoracic surgery and became well-known and respected by his colleagues and patients for his surgical skills. Later in his career he obtained further training in the nascent specialty of vascular surgery. He was a member of the medical staffs at Notre Dame Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, Catholic Medical Center, Elliot Hospital, VA Hospital and Hillsborough County Hospital. He served as president of the Medical Staff of the former Notre Dame Hospital. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the NH Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

He was passionate about classical music. He was a violinist with the former New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of Roland Tapley, and the Boston Civic Symphony with Max Hobart.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years Ruth (Leung) and five children: Arthur and his wife Shirley, Paul and his wife Lea, Grace and her partner Stephen Schectman, James and his wife Karen, and David and his wife Heather; six grandchildren: Catherine, Bethany, Elizabeth, Andrew, Robert and Sydni; three immediate siblings: Wing-Yin Leong of Vancouver, WA, Yvonne Feng of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and Kenneth Tung and his wife Mimi of Charlottesville, VA; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Manchester Kidney Center for their sustaining and compassionate care over the years.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 in the chapel at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, Manchester.
