Leo T. Wontkowski, 88

Leo T. Wontkowski, age 88, of Attleboro, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his daughter's home in Attleboro on Thursday, Christmas Day, December 25, 2014.
He was the beloved husband of the late Anna J. (Klumbis) Wontkowski to whom he was wed for 45 years at the time of her death in 1996.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on November 13, 1926, he was a loving son of the late Teofil J. and Caroline E. (Kuza) Wontkowski. He grew up in Pawtucket and was a graduate of Saint Raphael Academy.
Following graduation from high school, Leo proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during WWII. He was honorably discharged from the service on July 11, 1946 with the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate, Third Class.
Upon returning to civilian life, he continued his education; earning his bachelor’s degree in math from Providence College and a master’s degree in education from Bridgewater State College. He later returned to school; attending Brown University, Yale University and Syracuse University.
A resident of Attleboro for over 50 years, Mr. Wontkowski was a retired principal having served at Dighton Junior High and at the Dighton Elementary School. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
Leo’s favorite times spent were those in the presence of his adoring family; especially with his grandson Matt.
His hobbies included gardening, walking, reading, math, attending harness racing, and watching western movies and shows on Television.
Leo held a special place in his heart for animals and will happily be remembered for always being there to lend others a helping hand.
He is survived by his loving and devoted daughters; Carol A. Wontkowski of Attleboro, Elizabeth A. Pichi and her husband Robin of Attleboro and Ann P. Lucci and her husband Patrick of Beverly. He was the cherished grandfather and best friend of Matthew R. Pichi of Attleboro. He was the brother of the late Ilean Wontkowski.
His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 30th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Joseph’s Church, 391 High St., Central Falls, RI.
Military honors will follow at the North Purchase Crematory in Attleboro. Burial will be private.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, December 29th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
