Quentin W. Youngblood, 91, of New Bedford, died peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2014 after a brief illness at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late May R. (Leo) Youngblood and the father of Steven L. Youngblood.
Born in New Bedford on April 28, 1923, the son of the late Julian B. and Bertha M. (Jackson) Youngblood, he grew up in the West End of New Bedford and attended Thomas R. Rodman School. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1942 and was a member of the track team. He then attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and became a pilot. He was stationed at Kearns Army Air Base in Utah, Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi, MacDill Field in Tampa, Florida, and Hunter Field in Savannah, Georgia. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he continued to fly out of New Bedford Airport, and worked at the New York Sea Grill in Mattapoisett, the Famous Restaurant in Miami Beach, and Freedman's Credit Union. He spent many years in the shoe industry, working at Freedman's Shoe in New Bedford, Green Shoe in Boston, and Knapp Shoes in New Bedford and Brockton, primarily as a plant engineer. He was an avid golfer, having won tournaments at Reservation Golf Club. He also enjoyed being a spectator at the America's Cup Yacht Races in Newport, RI. After retirement he enjoyed traveling with his family to Cape Cod, Newport, Maine and Canada.
In addition to his son, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Amelia Youngblood, and several nieces and nephews, including Winnifred Pina, Julian E.T. Youngblood II and his wife Joan, James E. Youngblood and his wife Elizabeth, Barry L. Youngblood, Wendy B. DePina and her husband Charles, Gwendolyn Amado, Jocelyn L. Andrade, Kimberly M. Youngblood, Deborah and Duncan Moore, Cheryl Baynham, Jeffrey Youngblood, Valerie Craigwell White and Jadine Craigwell. He is also survived by several great-nephews and nieces.
He was the brother of the late Julian E.T. Youngblood, William H. Youngblood III, Hamer F. Youngblood, Mary B. Youngblood, Tracy F. Youngblood, and Yvonne (Youngblood) Craigwell.
His Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 884 Kempton St., New Bedford on a day and time to be announced.
