Obituary

GLOUCESTER – Barbara J. (Johnson) Herrick, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 21, 2014, surrounded by family and friends following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Herrick. They shared 60 years of marriage together.
Born in Gloucester on June 29, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Dora M. (Roberts) Johnson. She was a lifelong resident and graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1951. She attended Stonehill College, achieving a certificate in food services.
Following graduation she worked at Woodman’s of Essex for many years. Knowing how to run a kitchen, she was employed by the City of Gloucester for thirty years, where she was proud to work with “her girls” as a cafeteria manager. She had worked at all but one of the schools and retired from the Gloucester High School in 1995.
She and Bob enjoyed traveling to Canada and many trips to the Caribbean. A lifelong member of the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, she was also active in the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She also served as a Den Mother to Troop 60 in West Gloucester.
She loved all God’s creatures, especially her cats. Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor and a great laugh. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret, wife of Thomas Kerr, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grand nephews, and dear friends including, Madalene McComiskey and her family. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Avis Newman and Thelma DuBois, and brothers, Samuel, Clarence “Pic” and Everett Johnson.
In keeping with her wishes, prayers of committal will be held privately in the Beechbrook Cemetery. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, 488 Essex Ave., Gloucester, MA or the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
