Obituary

Mr. Gilbert Selwyn Green, 90, formerly of Fitzgerald died Friday, December 19, 2014 at NHC Nursing Home in Athens, TN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Dr. Michael Ruffin officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Fitzgerald from 6 until 8 Monday evening, December 22, 2014.

Mr. Green was born May 23, 1924 in Fitzgerald to the late Thomas Henry and Kathleen Green. He lived in Fitzgerald until the death of his beloved wife of 63 years, Mildred Cauley Green then moved to an Assisted Living Residence in Athens, TN where his daughter lives. After graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1942, he served in the Army Air Force from 1943 - 1946 as an airplane mechanic both in the US and Panama, returning home to work for CSX Railroad until his retirement.

As a master gardener, Mr. Green maintained a beautiful yard and bountiful vegetable garden and various fruits which he happily shared with friends and family. Along with his wife he had been a volunteer with the Blue-Gray Community Hospice for several years. Mr. Green had a tremendous work ethic and when asked, he commented that he "always enjoyed working" whether on the train, yard, garden or field work, and that was evident to all who knew him. More often than not when he went fishing, he also found brush to clear or gates or fences to repair as well. Working was his hobby.

Mr. Green was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years, and was in the Baracca Class.

Survivors include son, Ronald Gilbert Green,his sons Cameron Chase Langhoff and Cord Alan Green all of Atlanta and daughter Marilyn Green Currence, husband Chuck and daughters Emily Claire Currence of Knoxville, TN and Megan Eugenia Currence of Decatur, TN., and niece Carol Green Howell and nephew Richard Green.

The family suggests memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Blue-Gray Community Hospice, P.O. box 1447, Fitzgerald, GA, 31750.
