Nancy Lois Gilliam
August 4, 1941- November 29, 2014
Nancy Lois Gilliam, 73, of Anderson, died peacefully, in the arms of her loving husband, on November 29, 2014 at Community Hospital Hospice in Indianapolis, IN.
Nancy was born August 4, 1941 in Crawfordsville, IN to Maudie Morgan and Lee Brookshire.
Family, friends, gardening and nature were Nancy’s passions and delights. She thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors in her garden, observing birds, and experiencing the transitions of seasonal changes. Nancy grew up in Converse, IN as the only daughter in a family of four boys. She attended Florida Southern College and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, and there met the love of her life, Bob Gilliam. They married on June 21, 1964 and celebrated a wonderful 50th Anniversary with family in Salida, CO in June 2014. Nancy and Bob settled in Anderson, Indiana in 1976 and raised three boys and other neighborhood children on Shady Lane.
Besides being a devoted mother, Nancy was also an honored educator, beginning a teaching career in 1963 at the same one-room schoolhouse in Converse that she attended as in grades 1-12. Nancy retired from the Anderson Community Schools in 2007 after 36 years as an educator.
Nancy was a long-time member of Madison Park Church of God. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Job's Daughter, American Federation of Teacher's and the Chesterfield American Legion Auxiliary .
Nancy is survived by her husband, Robert H. (Bob) Gilliam Jr. of Anderson; sons, Rob (Jessica) of Colorado; Eric of Marion, IN; and Kyle(Julie) of Colorado; grandchildren, Eric Robert, Maya, Sequoia, Skyler, Isabel, and Brooks; brother, Jesse (Dottie) Brookshire of Converse, brother-in law, Farley(Leslie) Gilliam ;sisters-in-law Julie and Linda Brookshire, special friends, Dick and Katie Wohlberg, Norman Michaud, Alice and Joe Varde, Ollie Leist, D.H.D., The ladies of Shady Lane and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nancy was preceded in her death by her parents; her brothers Don, Ed, and Jan Eric Brookshire; her sister-in-law Jean Ann Brookshire.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Madison Park Church of God with Rev. Tom Malbone officiating.
The visitation will be from 10:00a.m.- 12:00 noon Saturday at the church.
