Presvytera Irene (Greos) Zanetos, a resident of Andover for more than 20 years and beloved wife of the late Rev. John C. Zanetos, former Dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England, died at the Hellenic Nursing Center in Canton, Massachusetts, on Wednesday morning, December 10, 2014. She was 90 years old.
Born in New Britain, Connecticut, on July 17, 1924, she was the beloved daughter of the late Leon and Catherine (Leontaris) Greos of Chios Greece who immigrated to the United States in 1923. Irene was a graduate of Connecticut State College, class of 1946. She was the first of her family born in America and first to graduate from college.
She had worked as a teacher in the Boston and Westwood School Systems for many years. In Pasadena, California, where Father John served at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church, she also taught school in neighboring Sierra Madre.
In her spare time, Irene enjoyed going to the opera, symphony, theater and traveled extensively around the world. She also loved to sing and had been a member of many church choirs. She will be dearly missed.
Irene is survived by her loving children; Dean and his wife Alison Zanetos of Los Angeles, California and Eugenia and her husband Richard Buba of Andover, cherished grandchildren; Jonathan and his wife Allison Buba, John and his wife Rachael Zanetos, Christina and her husband Richard Pawelczyk and Stephan Buba and four great-grandchildren; Dylan, Charles, Kylie and Dean.
Her nieces include Karen Isaac, Maryann Fredrick, Cynthia Greos and nephew Leon Greos.
Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Sunday, December 14, 2014, from 4 to 7 PM.
Irene's Funeral Service will be celebrated in Sts. Constantine & Helen Church, 71 Chandler Road, Andover on Monday, December 15, 2014, at 12 o'clock. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Internment following the service will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
