Obituary

Arthur R. Longwell, Sr., 74, of Worcester, passed away Tuesday, December 9th after a brave battle with cancer. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Marianne (Joudrey) Longwell; a son, Arthur R. Longwell, Jr. and his wife Robin of Rutland; a daughter, Lisa A. Ludwig and her husband Lawrence of Salem, NH; his mother, Gladys E. (Mahan) Longwell of Worcester; two brothers, Ronald I. Longwell of Ballston Lake, NY and Malcolm H. Longwell of Oxford; two sisters, Joan M. Beauchemin of Marlboro and Susan J. Longwell of Rutland; two grandsons, Bobby and Nicholas Longwell of Rutland; and several nephews and nieces.
He was born in Worcester, the son of the late Arthur I. Longwell; he graduated from South High School and Worcester State Teachers College, where he received his bachelors and Masters degrees. Mr. Longwell was a teacher of science and mathematics for the Worcester Public Schools, primarily at North High School. He retired in 2001. He was a member of the Mass. State Retired Teachers Association, was a 50 year member of the Masons, and had been a member of the former Bethany Congregational Church. Family was his greatest love, but he also enjoyed playing tennis. A longtime member of the Worcester Tennis Club, he played in many tournaments throughout New England and was twice ranked first place in New England, once for men’s doubles and once for mixed doubles. He was also a member of a local chess club. He had served in the U.S. National Guard.
The Longwell family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of UMass Memorial Hospital for the exceptional care they provided Arthur. He was loved by many and will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor.
Calling hours are Thursday, December 11th from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. His funeral will be held Friday, December 12th, with a service at 10:00 A.M. in Hadwen Park Congregational Church, 6 Clover Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
