Obituary

Alice Phoenix passed away on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 at her home in Jamaica Plain, MA. She was surrounded by her husband, Paul Reynolds, and her closest friend, Simba Blood. Alice struggled with ovarian cancer for the last five years and managed to continue to live a full and adventurous life until the very end. Alice was born May 24th, 1963 in Minneapolis, MN, where she developed a lifelong friendship with Simba, who became part of her chosen family. She was an active member of the local music community – attending many shows, singing and playing guitar with different musicians, and DJing a radio program dedicated to underground music for several years. She moved to Boston in 1993. A passionate and curious soul, Alice sought spiritual and intellectual truth, eventually earning a degree at UMass Boston and a Masters' degree at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Alice was a generous person who performed countless hours of community service. She was a powerful example to many women in her communities. Alice met her husband, Paul in 2001 and they became lifelong partners. Alice developed a large network of loving and supportive friends and she was active in the Unitarian Universalist community of First Church of Jamaica Plain. Alice spent the last few years traveling the world – visiting Iran, Turkey, Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and the mountains of Vermont. She continued to see live music and engage with friends despite her health challenges. She is survived by her husband, Paul Reynolds, her dear friends, Simba Blood and Dianne Jennings, her mother Jeanne Moore, her father, Lynn Castner, and brothers Ian and Matt, countless friends and those she inspired – also her two beloved kitties: Bessie and Ella. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 on Sunday, December 7 at First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian Universalist, 6 Eliott Street, followed by a potluck in the Parish Hall. For memorials, Alice encouraged blood donations. Other memorials can be made to Second Chance Shelter for Cats in Jamaica Plain and First Church Jamaica Plain, Unitarian Universalist
