Obituary

YONKERS, NY – Sr. Dorothy Gallant, 76, of the Sisters of Charity, passed away to God’s Kingdom on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Mary The Queen Convent, 35 Vark Street, after a long illness.
She leaves her fellow religious sisters and many friends in New York. She also leaves her two loving sisters, Dolly Leblanc and Rita and her husband Armand McCarthy, all of Webster; 4 nieces, Kathy and her husband David Flibbert, Judith Dupont, Jacqueline Power and Christine and her husband Brian Emery; 4 nephews, Richard and his wife Mary McCarthy, Kevin and his wife Kathy Dupont, David Dupont and Larry Dupont; 5 grand-nephews, Jason and his wife Valerie Flibbert and their daughter Kayla, Jeffrey and his wife Stephanie Flibbert, Joshua and his wife Michelle Emery, Zachary and Josiah Emery; a grand-niece, Kellie Rose Emery; and many cousins and friends in the Webster area. She was preceded in death by her nephew Alan Dupont in 2010.
She was born and raised in Webster, a daughter of Amos and Martha (Lewandowski) Gallant. She graduated from Saint Joseph Elementary School and Our Lady of the Angels Academy in Enfield, CT. She became a Felician Sister in 1956 and was known as Sister Dorothy Marguerite. She later completed her college studies and earned a doctorate from Fordham University.
Sister taught elementary school for 25 years as a Felician sister. She then followed her dream to help the poor and homeless by joining the Sisters of Charity in New York City in the early 1980’s. She co-founded homeless shelters called Life Experience and Faith Sharing Association which were in operation in the Bronx area for 25 years. As a trained social worker, she brought help and consolation to those who had nothing: the homeless and the broken. She thought of everyone else before herself.
The funeral arrangements are being made by the Sisters of Charity in New York. She will leave this life in a plain box in a religious garment and sandals on her feet. She will enter the Kingdom of God with angels on her side.
