Henry K. Ieong (Young), 91 of LaGrange Park, Illinois, died November 21, 2014.
He was born October 23, 1923 in Djakarta, Indonesia, the 9th of 10 children. He worked for US Aid, and then immigrated to Abilene, Texas on a scholarship to gain a B.A. in Electrical Engineering from McMurray University.
He relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he was employed by Western Electric. He met and married Lilia Herrera on July 4, 1964, an RN who had been recruited from Bogota, Columbia to work at Cook County Hospital. He and Lila raised Michael and David in LaGrange, Illinois in the home that would be his place of residence for nearly the remainder of his life.
Henry was a world traveler, frequently traveling to his home country of Indonesia as well as the country of his family’s origin, China. He spoke seven languages and for a period of time taught Japanese. He placed greatest value on family and education, and was a student of many interests to the end.
Henry is survived by his former spouse, Lila Herrera of Roslindale; his two sons Michael H. Ieong of Roslindale and David R. Ieong of Watertown; and his granddaughter, who brought him great delight in his last year of life, Dylan Margaret Ieong.
His funeral will be from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY, Monday, December 1, 2014 at 9:00a.m. Followed by a funeral mass in Holy Name Church at 10:00a.m.
Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, November 30th 2-5 pm. Interment will be private.
