Acushnet – Lewis W. “Bill” Elgar, Jr., 63, of Acushnet died at home after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family on December 11, 2004. He was the husband of Marcia A. (Madora) Elgar; they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past June.
Mr. Elgar was born in Acushnet, son of the late Lewis W. Elgar, Sr. and the late Lillian M. (Jackson) Elgar, and was a lifelong resident of the town. He was a member of the Long Plain United Methodist Church, Acushnet. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy, was an on-call firefighter for the Town of Acushnet for several years and was a member of the Acushnet Safety Committee. He was employed by the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber, New Bedford for 25 years until its’ closing. In 1988 he started his own business, Quality Home Heating in Acushnet, which he operated until retiring due to illness. He was a co-owner of Jackson Orchard, Acushnet. He enjoyed restoring his El Camino but most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by 2 daughters: Cheryl Ann Desroches and her fiancé Michael Fleurent of Fairhaven and Charlene R. Alves of New Bedford; 2 brothers: Richard J. Elgar and his wife Bette of Acushnet and James MacFarlane and his wife Emily of Florence, KY; 2 sisters: Ruth Texeira and her husband Manny of Dighton and Lorraine Guy of Rochester; 2 granddaughters: Jessica R. Desroches and her fiancé Lars Vinjerud III of Fairhaven and Kaylee R. Desroches of Fairhaven; 1 great-grandson: Lars “L.J.” Vinjerud IV; and several nieces & nephews.
He was father of the late Lewis W. “Little Billy” Elgar III and brother of the late Alicia Plant, Ruth Benson.

Funeral service on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at the Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

Interment in Long Plain Cemetery, Acushnet.
