Eugene F. "Buddy" Whelan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following an extended illness. He was 80 years old.
Buddy was born in Boston on December 31, 1933, a son of the late Thomas Whelan and Brigid D. (Killoran) Whelan. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. He enlisted into the United States Air Force on February 28, 1952 and served his country with pride and courage during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on February 27, 1956 with the rank of Airman First Class. Buddy furthered his education and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Boston State College. Buddy worked for Boston Edison Company for over 35 years and retired as a Supervisor in 1995. He was a member of the Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Bunker Hill Associates, Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, Bunker Hill American Legion Post # 26, V.F.W. Post # 544 and lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. Buddy enjoyed the quality time he was able to spend with his family and the time spent at his summer home in Pocasset. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all the Boston sports teams.
Buddy is the beloved husband of 55 years to Kathleen M. "Kitty" (Farren) Whelan. He is the devoted father of Jacqueline Chaisson and her husband Stephen of Charlestown and David Whelan and his wife Maryhelen of Charlestown. He is the loving Pup to Bridgette Ridlon and her husband Eric, JeanMarie Chaisson, Michael Chaisson and his great-grandson Jack Ridlon. He is the brother of the late Catherine Hansen, Sr. Thomas Brigid Whelan OP, Peg Malloy, Thomas and Joseph Whelan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Buddy's Funeral on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Monday, December 1, 2014 from 2 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
