Obituary

Jason Providakes, age 90, passed away on November 22. He was born on April 24th, 1924 in Worcester, MA. He was son of the late George Providakes and Vasiliki Georgopoulos. He belonged to the Greek Orthodox Church. During World War II he served in the USCG Merchant Marine, and was at Normandy during D-Day. After the war, he was honorably discharged, and continued in the Merchant Marine traveling over the world. In 1951, he met his late wife, Tina, and quit the sea to be with her. He worked for H.P. Hood and Sons Dairy Company as a supervisor until his retirement. Mr. Providakes was a member of the Shriners. He leaves his nephews, Arthur, Bill, George, Harry, James, Jason, and a niece, Alexis; his grandnephews and grandnieces Harry, Anthony, Bryan, David, Eric, Daniel, Amanda, Emily, Kimberly, Mary, and Olivia as well as two great-grandnieces McKenna and Sophia, and great-grandnephew Dom. He is predeceased by his brothers Manny, Harry, and Fred. His life fulfilled the classic paradigm of service to neighbors, service to country, marriage for love to a beautiful girl, and a useful career followed by a lengthy, good-humored, and at times stubborn old age. He will be very much missed. Calling hours will be held on the morning of the funeral, Wed., Nov. 26, 2014 at St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery. The Grise Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Any donations should be made in his memory to St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Springfield MA.
