Charles E. Hughes, 86, of Smithfield and Naples, FL, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at his home. He was the husband of Eunice (Cooper) Hughes. They had been married for 44 years.
Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Maurice and Martha (Woods) Hughes. He had lived in Pawtucket before moving to Naples, FL. He recently returned to Smithfield in March, 2014.
He was a US Marine having served in Korea. He was a dispatcher for the Pawtucket Fire Department and an ambulance driver for Costigan Ambulance before retiring. He was a Lifetime member of the Smithfield Elks and the Pawtucket Elks. He was a member of the Pawtucket FOPA and the Florida Sheriffs Organization.
He was the father of Susan Benoit, of Pawtukcet, Charles Hughes of Barrington and Lori Hughes of Smithfield. He is also the grandfather of Michael Benoit, Marissa and Kelsey Hughes and great grandfather of two. He was the brother of the late Mary Hughes.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 8am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 9am in St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visitation Friday 4-7 pm.
