GLOUCESTER: Fred S. Tarbox, Jr. 85, died peacefully Wednesday, November 19, 2014 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Bezdegian) Tarbox who died 2012.
Born in Gloucester on November 11, 1929, he was the son of the late Fred S. Tarbox, Sr. and Gladys M. (Dickinson) Tarbox. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1948. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was honorably discharged as an aircraft mechanic on August 11, 1954.
Fred was employed as a machinist at the former Murmac Manufacturing Co. in Gloucester for twenty-four years. He had also worked at Eaton-Nova and Varian in Beverly for several years. He was a life member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks #No. 892 and the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion.
Fred enjoyed playing poker and especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren vacationing in Maine. In retirement he enjoyed genealogy and had traced his ancestry back to the Mayflower.
He is survived by his three children, Fred S. Tarbox, III of Gloucester, Pamela J. McKechnie and her husband, John of Rockport and Cheryl Powers and her husband, Tom of Gloucester; seven grandchildren, Spencer, Jordan and Colby Tarbox, Mark and Rachel McKechnie and Emily and Winslow Powers and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Norma Chomack, Margaret Langley, Donald Tarbox, Robert Tarbox and Gertrude Tarbox.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 – 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. Interment with military honors will be held in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, W. Gloucester.
