Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) A. Gillert, 65, of Portland, Maine for the past 14 years, passed away peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on October 23, 2014.

Larry was born in Yonkers, New York on May 1, 1949 and raised in the beautiful neighborhood of Mayfair Acres in Westchester County, New York for the majority of his childhood. Larry attended Columbus Avenue Elementary School and graduated from Valhalla High School in 1968 in Valhalla, New York.

Larry's early employment included social work at Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry, New York for more than ten years. Larry then focused on his talent in carpentry and began a predominantly self-employed career. Larry worked for many years in the Westchester County, New York area under Larry Gillert Contracting. Larry then moved to Delray Beach, Florida for a number of years and continued his work in that area before moving and doing so in Maine. Larry's professional work has been featured in Woman's Day Magazine (October 1991) and Delray Times Newspaper (May 1995).

Larry was a well-dressed, kind, compassionate, sensitive man with a great sense of humor. He was artistic himself and full of knowledge in Art History and Architecture. He loved nature, wildlife, and his own animals. He enjoyed listening to music of the 1960s. His hobbies included working on his cars and viewing classic muscle automobiles ads in Hemmings Motor News Magazine.

Larry is survived by his mother, Hilda Gillert of Freeport; five children and their spouses, Kendle (Kristoffer) Ruzich of N.Y.; Larry (Lora) Gillert of CT; Amanda Gillert of N.Y.; James Gillert of WA; Nicholas Gillert of Yarmouth; twin grandchildren Lakyn and Dean Ruzich; brother, Henry Gillert of Yarmouth and sister, Laura (Paul) Daubitz of MA; nephews, Everett and Neil Gillert.

Larry was predeceased by his father, Robert Gillert.

Deepest appreciation and thanks to Hospice of Southern Maine and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care provided to Larry and family.

A private burial will be conducted in New York. Arrangements are with Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service, Buxton www.mainefuneral.com
