Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Mabelle L. (Leavitt) Wonson, 97, died peacefully Friday, October 17, 2014 at her home. She was the wife of the late William H. Wonson who died in 2000.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio on January 17, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Mary Lee (Hamilton) Leavitt. She has resided in Gloucester since 1930 and was a graduate of Gloucester High School.
Mabelle, along with her husband had managed Huck’s Boat Livery for many years before her retirement in 1993. She was also employed as a stitcher during World War Two for the former D.O. Frost and Cooney Sail Loft. She was an avid amateur oil painter and wood carver and enjoyed wallpapering and painting.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara D. Tarr and her husband, Kenneth F. of Gloucester; two sons, William H. Wonson, Jr. of Winterport, Maine and Russell R. “Dick” Wonson and his wife, Janice of Haverhill; a sister, Mary Elvira Spinney of Gloucester; five grandchildren Kenneth F. Tarr, Jr. and his partner, Annette Doucette of Gloucester, Christopher D. Tarr and his wife, Karen of Pepperell, Deborah F. Bergman and her partner, David Swift, Cynthia D. Tarr and her partner, Jim Peterson and Jeffery W. Tarr and his wife, Leah all of Gloucester; sixteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sister, Charlotte Powers and four brothers, William, George, Edwin and Leslie Leavitt.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Ave., E. Gloucester at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
