George J. Oja, 92, of Worcester passed away peacefully at Saint Vincent Hospital on Tuesday, October 14, 2014.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Beatrice A. (Johnson) Oja, three children, Russell Oja and his wife Amy of Orlando, Jane Bedard and her husband Rick of Paxton, Gary Oja of Worcester, two grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda, and several cousins.
George was born and raised in Worcester, graduated from Commerce High and Worcester Junior College and was a member of the Pi Tau Kappa Fraternity.
He was an airplane mechanic in the 303rd Army Air Service Group during World War II. After the service, George was employed as a draftsman at U.S. Envelope, and later spent 20 years at Riley Stoker (now Babcock Power).
George enjoyed the various activities involved when raising a family such as attending baseball games, dance recitals, and Scout meetings. He also took his family on summer vacations to Hampton Beach and visited numerous attractions throughout the region.
During his retirement, George developed an interest in antique car memorabilia and was a member of the Ford Model A Club of America. He also spent his time traveling throughout New England with his wife, and maintained a vegetable garden. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Finnish Heritage Society of Rutland, and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club of Worcester.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will follow at All Faiths Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Finnish Heritage Society, Trinity Lutheran Church, or the American Cancer Society.
