James Michael Vargos passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, Philip Hulitar Center. James was born on April 2, 1953 in Acushnet, the son of Joseph E. and Margaret Vargos.
James grew up and lived his early years in Fairhaven, graduating from Fairhaven High School. During these years, he excelled in baseball, bowling, golfing and ice hockey - playing alongside his brother Joe on the ice. James attended Bristol Community College, majoring in biology. Realizing biology wasn't his ultimate goal; James attended Bentley College in Waltham and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Taking the next step in his professional career, James completed the training and became a Certified Public Accountant. James proceeded to open his own business, serving many clients over his career, providing professional and timely tax consultation and preparation.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph E. and Margaret Vargos: He is survived by brothers: Stephen S. Vargos and wife Carol of Butte, Montana and Joseph E. Vargos III of New Bedford, Massachusetts; and sister Barbara A. Backstrom and fiancé Thomas Los of Ludlow, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind, Aunts Nancy A. Collins of New Bedford, Massachusetts and Dorothy Gardner of California; Uncles Antone Costa of Acushnet, Massachusetts and James E. Vargos and wife Brenda of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Nieces and Nephews: Deanna Cutrer and husband Brian of Slidell, Louisiana: Nichole Davis and husband Ryan of Tampa, Florida; Sara Dennehy and husband Brandt of Butte, Montana; Eric S. Backstrom of Providence, Rhode Island; Stephanie Vargos of Slidell, Louisiana; Tiffany Vargos of New Bedford, Massachusetts: and Aaron Vargos of New Bedford, Massachusetts as well as cousins Dorothy Dagnall and husband Brian of New Bedford, MA, Samuel Collins of New Bedford, MA, and Brenda Greene and husband Ron; business partners and friends.
James will be waked on Wednesday, October 1st from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2nd at the Kirby Funeral Home at 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.
Interment will take place at the Acushnet Cemetery immediately following funeral service.
