Obituary

William Bennett "Bill" Hurley passed away on Sept 15, 2014 surrounded by his family. Bill was a gentleman, an officer and a scholar who dedicated his life and career to his students, his soldiers and the service of others. He was born in Winthrop Community Hospital on November 29, 1939 to Patrick and Dorothy Hurley. He was a lifelong educator who taught for 30 years at Winthrop High School, retiring as the Mathematics Department Head in 2000 to become the Dean of Professional Studies at Endicott College. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Masters in Education from Northeastern University, MBA from Anna Maria College and Doctorate in Education from Johnson and Wales University. Upon retirement from Endicott, Bill founded Commonwealth Clinical Services Home Health Care Agency in 2005 and served as President and CEO. Dr. Hurley was also an Adjunct Professor at North Shore and Cambridge Colleges and continued to teach until his passing. Professor Hurley would inspire and guide his students with a rigorous intellect matched only by the warmth of his character. Bill served for 40 years in the Army and MA National Guard, retiring as a Brigadier General (MA). Over his distinguished military career, he served in a number of positions including 101st Engineer Company Commander, 26th (Yankee) Infantry Division Deputy G4, Command and General Staff College Instructor, 1022nd Civil Affairs Brigade Commander and Deputy Chief of the US Army Corp of Engineers Emergency Operations Center at the Pentagon. General Hurley’s affiliations include being past President of the First Corp of Cadets, member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and member of the Sons of Italy Renaissance Chapter. Bill was the patriarch of a large and loving family and the beloved husband of Sandra Jean (Olson) for 48 years. He was the devoted father to four children: Christopher Hurley and wife Dawn of Winthrop, Jennifer Herrey and husband Alex of Marblehead, Robert Hurley and wife Andrea of East Boston and Jeanne Holgersen and husband Steve of Winthrop. Brother of Thomas Hurley and wife Christine of Warrenton, VA, and the late Bennett (Buddy) Hurley and wife Maureen of Canton, MA, and survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren: Jonathan, Charlotte, Christian and Julia Hurley, Alanna and Alysia Herrey, Matthew and Andrew Hurley, Steven, Joseph, Annika, Michael, and Emma Holgersen. Funeral from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. WINTHROP, on Sat. Sept. 20, at 9am. A Funeral Mass will be held in the Holy Rosary Church, Winthrop at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial with Military Honors will be held in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section). Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Fri, Sept 19, from 4-8pm.
