Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Galatia (Mavroyiannis) Ktorides, 94, a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, September 12, 2014, the date of her Wedding Anniversary. She passed into Eternal Life at Wingate at Hampden surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Nicosia, Cyprus on April 28, 1920, a beloved daughter of the late Ioannis and Irini (Antoniou) Mavroyiannis. She was raised and schooled in Nicosia, Cyprus and immigrated to the United States and settled in Springfield in 1948. She was employed as a seamstress at the former Peerless Department Store in Springfield. Active in her faith, she was a communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos, the Daughters of Penelope, the Saint George Over 60 Club and the Carew Street Branch of the Springfield Golden Age Club. Most of all, Galatia was a woman of faith who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soul mate, John S. Ktorides who was Called Home on August 4, 2008. They were married on September 12, 1948 in Nicosia, Cyprus and were blessed with nearly 60 years of happiness together. She leaves her loving children, Stanley J. Ktorides and his wife, Anne Marie, of New Fairfield, CT and Irene Drewnowski and her husband, Jerry, of Chicopee; her five cherished grandchildren, Melanie Russell and her husband, Keith, Angela Galleano and her husband, Dan, James Ktorides, John Drewnowski and his wife, Melanie, and Carl Drewnowski; her five cherished great-grandchidren, Autumn and Robin Russell; Olivia and Nathan Drewnowski, and Gustavo Mateo Medina; her three loving sisters, Augousta Piponidis of Longmeadow and Xenoulla Tymviou and Nitsa Nicolaides, both of Cyprus; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Ktorides and Mavroyiannis families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her cherished grandson, John Ktorides who was Called Home on May 19, 2000; and four loving sisters, Loulla Velonis, Eleni Savvidou, Barbara Psomas and Nikki Pratley. Her family would like to thank the staff at Wingate at Hampden for the compassionate care that they provided her during her long Journey Home. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, September 17, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. in Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. Her burial will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Saint George Cathedral Building Fund, 22 Saint George Road, Springfield, MA 01104.
