Johanna T. (Donovan) Ellis, 85, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving children on September 6, 2014, after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Richard G. Ellis, Sr., with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.
“Janna” was born and raised in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Matthew and Nellie (Canty) Donovan.
In addition to being a loving wife and devoted stay at home mom while raising her four children, she was also a former employee of Cape News, the Sunshine Plaza Flea Market and National Wholesale Company (Natco) in the accounts receivable department.
Along with enjoying her family gatherings that included the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she also loved going to the I-Hop Restaurant and the Christmas Tree Shop. Most of all do to her, "luck of the Irish", she loved to dabble in a little friendly gambling along with watching her favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.

She is survived by her 4 children, Richard G. Ellis Jr. of Fall River, Steve Ellis and his wife Susan of Acushnet, Carol Elderkin and her husband John of Attleboro and Glenn Ellis of New Bedford; a sister, Mary (Donovan) Sullivan of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren, Tricia, Kristen, Erika, Sara, Linsey and Falon; 8 great-grandchildren, Gage, Harrison, Greyson, Hunter, Hanna, Adalina, Aaliyah and Remi; several cousins in Ireland; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Patrick Donovan and Matthew Donovan, and mother-in-law of the late Linda Ellis.
Her visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 16th from 4-7 pm in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St, New Bedford. Her Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 17th at 9 AM in Saint Lawrence Church, 565 County St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
