Fr. John M. “Jack” Toomey passed away peacefully Saturday evening at the Regina Cleri Residence in Boston’s West End. He was 79.
Jack was raised in Medford, the son of the late Michael and Esther (Scanlon) Toomey. Jack graduated from Malden Catholic High School with the class of 1953. He entered St. John Seminary and after completing his philosophy and theological studies he was ordained to the Priesthood in 1961. Fr. Toomey was assigned to St. Patrick Parish in Stoneham where he served for four years. He was selected for further studies and earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Catholic University. He later earned an MA from the Divine Word Centre in London, Ontario, Canada and also a Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies at Boston College. Fr. Jack taught at Boston College for several years and for many years taught ethics to aspiring nurses at Laboure College, until his retirement. He assisted regularly at St Joseph Parish in Medford. As his health declined he resided at Regina Cleri Residence.
Predeceased by his siblings, the late Richard Toomey and Sister Patricia Toomey, CSJ. He leaves his dear sister-in- law Alice Toomey of Medford and his nephews: Michael Toomey of North Easton, Richard Toomey of Medford and Christopher Toomey of Colorado.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford, Wednesday 4 thru 8 PM and again on Thursday September 11th at 10 AM followed by a funeral mass con-celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford at 11 AM. Services will conclude with burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
