Butcher Boy Market, President and Founder
William J. Yameen, “Uncle Bill”, 88 passed away Sunday August 31, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. He was born to Lebanese immigrant parents, Rose (Lebbos) and James. Bill attended Lawrence schools but dropped out in the seventh grade to work with his father and uncles at the U-Save Market. After moving to Danbury, Connecticut to work in his uncles fur factory, Bill and his father moved back to Lawrence to open the Thrift Food Market on South Union Street with the help of his sister Evon and brothers Kenneth and Daniel. In 1955 Bill had the foresight to open one of the first stores on Salem, New Hampshire’s busy Route 28 and named it “The Butcher Boy Market.”
Bill, along with his family, operated the Butcher Boy Steakhouse in North Andover and Butcher Boy Restaurant in Nashua, New Hampshire. In 1996, again with the help of his family, Bill decided to replace their small meat market in North Andover with what is now the Butcher Boy Market Place. Bill was ahead of his time with the concept of how meat was cut, trimmed and displayed.
Bill was a father figure to his sister Joyce and his brother Tom. He was very influential and generous in the lives of his nieces and nephews. Bill’s generosity touched not only family and friends but strangers as well. Bill loved all Boston sports teams, but his greatest joy was his family and work. He loved dealing with vendors, sales people and of course his valued customers.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Ann F. Devlin, sister Evon and brother Daniel. Bill is survived by his brother Kenneth and his wife Catherine, his sister Joyce and her husband Dr. Joseph Maroun, his brother Tom and his long time companion Kathy Timmons, and his sister-in-law Elaine M Yameen. Bill also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was “The Butcher Boy” and will be missed by many.
