Richard C. Urie, 89, passed away Sunday August 24, 2014 in Brooksby Village of Peabody, where he had resided for the past 7 years. He was the husband of the late Marion I. (Cashman). Born May 8, 1925 to H. Thomas and Ruth (Caldwell) Urie, Richard was a graduate of Marblehead High School with the Class of 1942. He went on to spend a post-graduate year at Governor Dummer Academy before joining the US Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Mr. Urie stayed in the Marine Corps as part of the occupying forces of Japan until 1946. In February of 2012, he received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, in appreciation of his efforts in battles on Saipan and for his years of dedicated service in the US Marine Corps during WWII Following his service to his country, he completed his education at Colby College and was a graduate of Boston College Law School with the Class of 1952.
After being admitted to the Massachusetts Bar Assoc. in 1952, Richard practiced in Lynn for several years before becoming the President of Rotary Machine Co. in Lynn as well as the Benjamin Reel Co. of Bedford, OH. In 1962 Mr. Urie started RMS Associates, a marketing and consulting firm specializing in women’s fashion from foreign and domestic manufacturers. He, alongside his late wife Marion, who passed away in 1999, remained active in the company’s day to day operations until his retirement in 2000.
Richard was very active in the Camp Fire Girls (now known as Camp Fire), where he served as President of the Lynn Chapter, Chairman of the New England Region, member of the National Board of Directors and received the Luther Gulic award for service to Camp Fire Girls. He was also the past president of Magic Lantern Playhouse.
Mr. Urie is survived by his 4 daughters, Karen E. Urie of Dallas, TX, Sandra A. Urie and her husband Frank Herron of Winchester, Susan U. Donahue and her husband Paul of Winchester and Beth U. Driscoll and her husband William of Portsmouth, VA, and brother of the late Robert Urie. He is further survived by his dear grandchildren, Katherine Kerr and her husband Terrance, Christopher and Abigail Donahue, William Driscoll and his wife Katie, Richard, Timothy and Clare Driscoll and his great grandson Liam Driscoll. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours in the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Wednesday August 27 from 5-8PM. Funeral service and interment are private. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
