TAUNTON – Manuel Tavares, husband of Maria F. (Sousa) Tavares, died at his Taunton home on Aug. 20, 2014.
He was 74.
Born in St. Michael, Azores, he was the son of the late Ernesto and Maria dos Anjos (Melo) Tavares.
Educated in the Azores, he later served in the Portuguese Army before moving to South Africa, where he worked as an electrician for many years.
He moved to Taunton with his family in 1987.
Mr. Tavares was employed by G. A. Rogers Co. of Fall River for twenty-three years before retiring several years ago.
A communicant of St. Anthony Church, in his spare time he enjoyed gardening, soccer, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of Taunton, he leaves two sons, Joao M. Tavares of Taunton, and Emiliano “E.T.” Tavares and his wife Jeniffer of East Taunton; a daughter, Mena Oliveira and her husband Joe of Taunton; three sisters, Maria Melo, Fernanda Carreiro and Manuela Carreiro, all of Taunton; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Wednesday Aug. 27th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Aug. 26th from 5 to 8 p.m.
