Obituary

Leonard R. Grimes of Groton Long Point passed away Friday, August 22, 2014 at his home.

He was born on February 26, 1926 in Waltham, MA, the son of Sherman H. Grimes and Genevieve A. (Reynolds) Grimes of New Haven, CT. He attended and graduated from Belmont, MA schools in June 1944 and enlisted in the Navy.

Upon service discharge in 1946, he attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1950 with a specialty in Civil Engineering.

Leonard married Rosemary (Hanlon) Grimes of Waterbury, CT on April 21, 1951 and they raised three sons and a daughter and lovingly guided them as they wended their way through teens, college, overseas studies & travel, illness, marriage and grandchildren. Rosemary passed away February 11, 2001.

During his professional employment he was responsible for the design of water treatment plants and waste water facilities for numerous municipalities in New England and many of the states along the Atlantic coast down to Florida. He was also called to Barrow, Alaska, to assist in the design of their water facilities.

He is survived by his sister Geneva deLabry and her spouse Gerard of Groton Long Point, , his sons Leonard (Sheryl) of Mansfield MA, James(Lisa)of Siesta Key FL, Michael of Uncasville, his daughter Teresa of Mansfield MA, and four grandchildren, Thomas, Mikayla, Evyn and Paige. He was predeceased by his siblings Sherman Grimes Jr. and Jeanne Grimes Arnold, as well as his grandson, Daniel Grimes.

His family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, August 28, from 9 to 10am at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Immediately following, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, River Road, Old Mystic.
