Obituary

Charles C. Alves, 91, of New Bedford died Monday August 11, 2014 at Sacred Heart Home after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Lillian A. (Cooke) Alves.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Rosaria S. (Lopes) Alves, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Alves was formerly employed as the classified advertising director for the Standard-Times until his retirement.

He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Bryant College. He served as the President of the Northeast Classified Advertising Managers Association in 1973 and 1974. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Hawthorne Country Club.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sacred Heart Home for the compassionate care given to Charles during his illness.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Susan L. Dumont of Dartmouth; and his grandson, Matthew C. Dumont of Brookline.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:30 AM at the Chapel of Sacred Heart Home, 359 Summer St., New Bedford. His family will receive visitors at the Chapel beginning at 8:30 AM prior to the Mass. A private family burial service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Veterans Transition House, 20 Willis St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
