Eleanor Powers Haweeli, a resident of Edgewood Center Nursing Home in Portsmouth, NH passed away of natural causes on August 8, 2014. She was 95.
Eleanor was born October 5, 1918 in Berlin, NH to Howard and Louise (Davies) Powers. She graduated from Berlin High School in 1935. From the time she was in third grade, she wanted to become a teacher. Due to her father’s death in 1930 and the Depression, her college education was interrupted several times as she did secretarial work to earn money for college expenses. Eleanor attended Plymouth Normal School, Plymouth, NH, the University of New Hampshire and received her B.S. degree in Business Education from Boston University, Boston, Mass. in 1948.
Between Plymouth and UNH, she worked for three years at Brown Paper & Pulp Company in Berlin, NH. In 1941 she relocated to Lancaster, PA where she became office manager for the Oklahoma Contracting Co. under contract to the War Emergency Pipeline, which helped transport crude oil from the Texas oil fields to refining and distribution areas near New York City and Philadelphia. The lines were a major part of the U.S. war effort and represented a significant achievement in pipeline technology in terms of sheer size and scope.
When the pipeline was completed, she received an emergency certificate to teach secretarial courses at Berlin High School. When the war ended and Norman Haweeli returned from serving overseas in the U.S. Marine Corp, they were married on July 20, 1946 at Christ Church Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Mass.
Besides teaching at Berlin High School, Eleanor also taught secretarial studies at the former YWCA Ballard School, New York, New York. Her last teaching position was at Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, New York. For many years she was active in the Episcopal Church. She was also active in the Daughters of the British Empire, the American Association of University Women, and the Plandome Women’s Club, Plandome, NY.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Haweeli, on November 18, 2004, her parents, her sister - Alma L. Powers - two brothers, Dewey and Howard, and an adopted brother, Albert. She is survived by her son, Stephen Haweeli, and grandson, Edward Haweeli, of East Hampton, NY; her niece Ellen Haweeli of Old Greenwich, CT and nephew John Haweeli, of New York, New York. She is also survived by two nieces -- Alma Hewey of Shapleigh, ME., and Cheryl Allen of East Rochester, NH -- who together enabled her and Norman to live independently for many years.
A private graveside service will be at a later date at the Russian City Cemetery, Berlin, NH. Arrangements are by the Bryant Funeral Home.
