Horace "Jack" Joaquin, 93, of New Bedford died Tuesday August 5, 2014 at the home of his niece, June Rodrigues, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Lillian (Buaiz) Joaquin.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio and Adelaide (Gomes) Joaquin, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Purgatory Church and was active in the New Bedford Lebanese Community.
Mr. Joaquin was formerly employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1981. He also was a realtor for 11 years with his brother in J&J Realty. He later worked for Sears Roebuck and Our Lady's Haven.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and crew chief on heavy bombardment aircraft under the command of General Curtis Lemay.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7239 in Acushnet.
He enjoyed writing letters to the editor of the Standard-Times with his opinions on local and national issues.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many good friends.
He was the brother of the late James Joaquin, Mary Rosa, Rose Lebert, Irene Medeiros, and Alice Gallion.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Friday at 8 AM. Divine Liturgy at Our Lady of Purgatory Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
