RAYNHAM - Carlos Isidoro de Jesus, husband of Ercília A. Simplício de Jesus of Raynham, died at the Tremont Skilled Care Center of Wareham on July 30, 2014.
He was 91.
Born in Madeira Island, Portugal, he was the son of the late João and Pacífica da Conceição de Jesus. He was educated in Portugal, where he graduated from the Instituto Comercial de Lisboa.
He later served as an officer with the Portuguese Merchant Marines.
A resident of the Taunton area since 1960, Mr. de Jesus received a bachelor’s degree from the former Southeastern Massachusetts University.
He taught Portuguese at Taunton High School for twenty years before retiring in 1987.
He also taught English to Portuguese immigrants for many years.
An Esperantist, and member of the Esperanto League of North America, he also belonged to the Massachusetts Teachers' Association.
An avid chess player, Mr. de Jesus also enjoyed contract bridge, Mathematics and fishing.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four daughters, Maria P. Downey and her husband John of Raynham, Cecília S. Darling and her husband Herbert of Wareham, Grace Naumowicz and her husband Paul of Foxboro, and Elizabeth P. de Jesus Rodrigues and her husband Armando of East Taunton; a sister, Eulália Rodrigues of RI; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a soon-to-be-born great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by seven siblings and a son, João Manuel.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Tuesday, Aug. 5th at 9:45 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Holy Family Church, East Taunton at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 4th from 4 to 7 p.m.
