Francis Augustine “Fran” Derby was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts September 6, 1930 and died in San Diego, California on July 20, 2014. He graduated from Boston University in 1951 with a degree in Business Administration, and earned his MBA from Michigan State University in 1952.
Fran entered the US Navy in 1952 as an Ensign. While in the Navy he served aboard three ships, and shore stations at Newport RI, Norfolk VA, Washington DC, Boston MA, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, and San Diego until 1975, retiring as Captain, Supply Corps.
After his military service he began his second career as a financial planning advisor with the Acacia Ameritas Company and 20/20 Financial Advisers until his death.
He has received the US Navy Supply Corps Lifetime Achievement Award and has been inducted into the Financial Advisers Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and the International Association of Financial Planners. He has maintained his connections and service to the military as a retired representative of the San Diego Supply Corps Association. He was a member of the finance committee for the San Diego Armed Services YMCA.
Fran’s wife Patricia (Sweeney) Derby predeceased him in 2010. He is survived by daughter Patricia Souza (Stephen) of North Dartmouth, Massachusetts; daughter Kathleen Sturdivant (Thomas) of San Diego; son Kevin Derby (Kimberly) of Bellingham, Massachusetts; grandchildren Stephen Souza, Jr, Kailene Souza Simon, Ashley Souza, Christopher Souza, and Madison and Morgan Derby, sister; Christine (Laurence) Marocco of Andover, brother; James Derby of Salisbury and two great-grandchildren, Bennett and Emerson Simon.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover at 1 PM. Visiting hours will be held prior to the Mass from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM at Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 Main Street, Andover. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
