CHICOPEE – Edna (Vandal) Lapointe, age 103, passed on during the seventeenth day of July 2014 and joined her husband, Francis J. Lapointe, her parents, Emma (Cote) and Leo Vandal, her sisters, brothers, hundreds of friends and many relatives in her next life. Edna was born at home in Chicopee on May 12, 1911, lived 103 years and spent 99 years on her own before living with the assistance of a wonderful staff for the past few years at Mount Saint Vincent Care Center in Holyoke. Edna attended Assumption school in Chicopee and maintained a love for reading throughout her life, reading about 1000 pages each week until her eyesight became limited. Many times she would recall how she read every book in the children’s library in the basement of the main library in the center of Chicopee. She is remembered with a brick on the walkway in the new library on Front Street. She retained her understanding of world events and recalled the events of her lifetime clearly to her last days. She was disappointed that Hilary Clinton did not become President making it clear she believed a woman could be President. She was the last surviving charter member of the Willimansett Heights Improvement League, a former member of the Franco American Woman’s Club of Willimansett, the Chicopee Golden Agers, the Aldenville Seniors and the Willimansett Golden Agers. She was the treasurer of the Valley View Tenants Social Club for twelve years where she made her home for 30 years. Edna walked the beaches of Hawaii, attended the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, toured the Caribbean on cruise ships, and spent time with her family at Disney World in Orlando and Disney Land in California. She spent New Year’s Eve on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California and fished Lake Champlain and Quabbin with her husband. She gambled in Las Vegas and rode the cable cars in San Francisco. A true Red Sox fan, she began attending games in 1948 and watched the sox lose in the last game of the World Series in 1975 from right field at Fenway Park. She saw Ted Williams hit his first home run after returning from Korea and shared the joy of World Series victories in 2004, 2007 and 2013. In her life, Edna remembered horse-drawn bread and ice delivery carts and a wooden covered bridge over the Chicopee River. Edna worked at the Five and Ten in downtown Chicopee during the Great Depression to support her extended family. She was married in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee, was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett for most of her life and a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville for the last thirty years. A devoted Catholic, she prayed the Rosary every day of her life. Her husband, Francis J. Lapointe passed away in 1970. She was also predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Wilfred Vandal, Charles Vandal, Yvonne Lemoine, Jeannette Charbonneau and Rita Cross. She leaves her son, former State Representative Francis C. Lapointe and his wife, Adele, of Chicopee; her grandson, David Ruel Lapointe and his wife, Joyce, of West Springfield; her granddaughter, Audrie Caron Raymond and her husband, John, of Granby; her four great-grandchildren who were the joy of her life in her later years, Nathaniel, Isabelle, and Annie Lapointe and Nolan Raymond.
