Obituary

SONORA, CA- Valerie (Stupakiewicz) Vigil, of Sonora, California, formerly of Salem, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at her home following a short illness. She was the wife of Phillip Vigil.

Born in Salem, MA, she was the daughter of Emilia (Gesek) Stupakiewicz of Salem, and the late Joseph C. Stupakiewicz.

Mrs Vigil was a graduate of St. John The Baptist Grammar School in the class of 1962 and Salem High School in the class of 1966. She was a member of the St John The Baptist Church, Salem, until moving to California in 1982.

She worked at the Jordan Marsh Co. in Peabody and continued to work in retailing at Mervyn’s, while living in California.

She was an active member of St Patrick’s Church in Sonora, and was a member and secretary of the Busy Bees Craft Guild, which raised money for scholarships by selling their craft work at annual fairs. She was a member of the Sonora Quilting Guild, enjoyed crochet, painting and making various types of handcraft items and gardening. She and her husband were avid golfers and she was a member of the Sonora Line Dancers.

She was a volunteer for many years at the Sonora Community Hospital and helped with and participated in the annual Relay of Life, Walk-a-thons, to raise money for cancer victims.

Besides her husband of 17 years, and her mother, she is survived by four stepchildren, five step-grandchildren, one brother, Joseph Stupakiewicz of Dayton, Ohio, three sisters, Rita and her husband Fred Vigil of Sonora, CA, Dorothy Stupakiewicz of Salem, Evelyn and her husband Michael Barr of Livermore, CA, and seven nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 10 AM at the St. John The Baptist Church, Salem. A committal service followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
