Obituary

Claire I. Auger passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014 at the age of 89, with her family by her side.
Claire was born in Manville Rhode Island August 2, 1924, the youngest of six children to George and Leona ( Berard) Auger. Claire graduated from St. Xavier’s Academy in Providence R.I., and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Rhode Island College of Education in 1945. She also earned a Masters’ Degree in Education in 1970 from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.
Claire’s vocation was also her avocation displayed through teaching elementary school children. Her teaching experience was far flung. She taught at Manville Public School in RI, and then joined the US Armed Services in Nuremburg Germany and taught children of the American families stationed abroad. She also spent one glorious year with the Army School in Bordeaux France.
Claire relocated to Maplewood NJ where she began a 35 year career at Tuscan School. Her fondest memories were spent here; building friendships at school and throughout the Maplewood community. Her gentle spirit and calm demeanor, and commitment to education inspired many.
Her retirement years were devoted to her family which adored her, friends, and community organizations. She enjoyed many years as a member of the Maplewood Garden Club, and volunteered at the VA Hospital in East Orange, NJ. Claire was also a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in South Orange NJ.
Claire is survived by her dear sister Lillian Auger, a niece Christine Scanlon, two nephews Edward Scanlon and James Scanlon, a great Niece, 4 great nephews and a great great nephew, and many friends. She was the sister of the late George E. and Maurice A. Auger, Florence L. Scanlon and Gertrude C. Auger. Our hopes and prayers is that her enduring legacy lives through us all. She will be greatly missed.
Her funeral will be Thursday at 9:00 am from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 71 Central St. Manville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. James Church, 33 Division St. Manville. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Manville. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5-8 pm.
Also, a memorial service will be held at Our Lady Of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 217 Prospect Street, South Orange, NJ, 07079 on Saturday July 12 at 10:00 AM
