Obituary

Kane Goldman, Ruth (nee Ruth Frances Cooper), age 89, formerly of Revere and Swampscott, succumbed to a lengthy bout with pulmonary disease and passed away surrounded by her family on July 4, 2014. She was the loving mother of Richard Kane and his wife Launa Zimmaro, and Laurie Kane Burkhardt and her husband Jim, as well as the proud grandmother of Sara and Jack Burkhardt. Dear sister of Bernice Goldfarb, Harvey Cooper, and Alan Cooper.

Ruth was born and raised in Revere, MA where she graduated as salutatorian from Revere High School. One of her proudest lifetime achievements was to have attended Boston University, where she graduated with honors with a B.S. in Business Administration in an era when few women attended a four-year college. She met her future husband, Samuel Kane, while working as a bookkeeper on Revere Beach. They married in 1947 and lived in Revere for their entire marriage; Ruth was widowed at the young age of 48 in 1974. Ruth was very socially-oriented, and greatly valued her many friendships throughout her years in Revere. She especially enjoyed entertaining her friends at their regular bridge and canasta gatherings.

Ruth had a lifelong commitment to education, and went on to receive a Master of Education degree from Northeastern University. She also instilled a drive to attain high educational achievement in her children, Richard and Laurie. Over the course of her professional career, Ruth taught school as a substitute teacher, and then as an elementary school and junior high school teacher until her retirement in 1983. Ruth married Sidney Goldman in 1981; they had an active and enjoyable retirement until Sid’s death in 2008.

Private burial service at Chevra Kadisha Cemetery in Everett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the American Lung Association, 460 Totten Pond Road, Suite 400, Waltham, MA 02451-1991. http://www.lung.org/.
