Obituary

WORCESTER-Bernardine J. (McCann) McQueeny, 86, of 340 May Street, formerly of 16 Monroe Avenue, died Tuesday, November 16th in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center. Her husband John A. McQueeny died in 1959. 2 sisters Elizabeth A. McCann and Catherine M. Driscoll predeceased her. She leaves 4 nephews, C. Stephen Driscoll of Kennebunkport, ME, John J. Driscoll of Sutton, Mark F. Driscoll of Clinton and James E. Driscoll of Worcester, a niece Kathleen M. Larson of Worcester and several grandnephews and grandnieces.

She was bon in Worcester the daughter of John H. and Ellen V. (Connolly) McCann, and was a graduate of Commerce High School and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned Bachelor and Master Degrees in Nursing at The Teachers College of Columbia University. Mrs. McQueeny last worked as the District Health Officer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, retiring 16 years ago. Previously she had served as Regional Public Health Officer, Chairperson of the Nursing Department at Greenfield Community College, a staff nurse for the Worcester Visiting Nurse Association and as an instructor at Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing. She was a long time member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, a former member of St. Peter’s Parish. Mrs. McQueeny was also a member and past president of the Worcester City Hospital Alumni Association, the Massachusetts Nurse Association, the Massachusetts Health Officers Association, Central Massachusetts Associated Boards of Health, and was an active volunteer with RSVP, the AARP and worked to help establish the Worcester Senior Center.

The funeral is Friday, November 19th, from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, November 18th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
