DUDLEY: James R. White, 89, of Pierpont Road died Wednesday, June 18 in Harrington Memorial Hospital.
He leaves his wife of 41 years, Barbara M. (Metterville) White; his daughter, Ingrid D. White of Detroit, MI; two step-daughters, Cheryl A. Boucher and her husband, Robert of Spencer; Kimberly J. Gregoire and her husband, David of Rutland; a step-son Raymond R. Wedge and his wife, Mary of Spencer; a sister, Harriet McLean of Charlton; nine grandchildren; a cousin and two nieces. He was predeceased by his son, Ronald U. White of India.
Mr. White was born in Worcester, one of five children born to the union of Wilmore H. and Theodosia A. (Lennon) White.
In his youth, his skill in designing and constructing prize-winning model airplanes culminated in a stint at the Tuskegee Army Flying School in 1943. He later served as a cadet in the Army Air Force.
His passion for photography ultimately led to the incorporation of the J.R. White Studio in Leicester in 1968. He retired after thirty years, but photography remained a creative outlet for him until his death.
An avid outdoorsman and nature-lover, he enjoyed bicycling, sailing, skiing, sports cars, and all manner of physical activity. In his 80s, he developed a fondness for motorcycle touring and kayaking. He affectionately was called a “beach bum” by his daughter because whenever he could he would be at a beach. He loved his annual vacations in Provincetown and Cape Cod.
Mr. White was described as a perfectionist; fiercely independent, with a tough veneer, yet uncompromising in his love and devotion to his family.
As requested, there will be no formal funeral services. J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer is directing arrangements.
