LAY - Becky Lay, 83, passed away Friday morning, June 13, 2014 at the Community Hospice Acosta Rua Center in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Lay was born September 13, 1930 in Elberton, GA. She grew up in Toccoa, GA. After graduation she moved to Waycross GA and worked for a radio station. While living in Waycross she met the love of her life on a weekend trip to Fernandina Beach when her boss and future brother in law, Bob Lay and his wife introduced her to Larry. They were married in Toccoa, GA and she joined Larry in Fernandina Beach over 60 years ago and built a wonderful life with each other and family.
She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach where she was involved with many supporting ministries. She volunteered with the Council on Aging and the Barnabas Center. She was a caring person and always willing to help in any way she was able.
She worked at the Fernandina Beach Recreation Center where she taught ceramics. She worked for many years as a secretary, most recently at Memorial United Methodist Church. She retired from the church in 1979.
Mrs. Lay was a devoted wife and mother and loved being a grandmother and great grandmother. They were all the light of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, William "Larry" Lay; a sister, Martha Joyce Rumsey and by her parents, Sam J. and Vera Clark Bellamy.
Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Melissa and Everett Phillips of Waycross, GA; three grandchildren, Mary Anne Wingate, Jennifer M. Wathke and Crystal Phillips; five great grandchildren, Tyler Wingate, Jeremiah Wingate, Riley Fisher, Johnathan Fisher and Ariana Knight; and many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 16, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home with Rev. Wanda Peacock officiating. Interment will follow in Green Pine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the funeral home.
