Obituary

FAIRHAVEN -- Henry G. James Jr., 79, of Melville Towers, New Bedford, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Alden Court Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Henry G. James Sr. and Mayme (Chase) James. He graduated from New Bedford High School and studied at Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth; he received a degree in sociology and English.
He was a talented singer, artist, poet, writer and puppeteer. He wrote and published a book, "Limericks, Fables and Poems," in the 1980s. He wrote many letters to the editor of The Standard-Times and was a frequent caller to Stan Lipp's "Open Line" radio talk show.
Known as the "poet laureate" of New Bedford, he received a citation signed by former Mayor John K. Bullard in recognition of his contribution to the cultural life of the city. He was recognized by the state House of Representatives for his donation of a painting, "Moby-Dick Contemplates the Pequod," to the New Bedford Senior Center. He was a member of the Bierstadt Art Society, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and Friends of the Elderly, and a former member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ in Providence.
He was a descendant of a local family that has extensive ties to the Wampanoag Indians.
His most enjoyable times were when he performed with the Melville Towers Chorus, putting on comical skits, and entertaining at the New Bedford Council on Aging, as well as area nursing homes.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Alice Ventura; a close friend, Mary Maciel; two sisters, Faith James of New Bedford and Pat Perry of North Dartmouth; and a niece and nephew.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday November 15, 2004 at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford, followed by burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, New Bedford. Ma. Visiting hours Sunday from 3 - 6 p.m.
