CHARLES JOSEPH

MYSTIC- Charles John Joseph, 86, of Mystic, died peacefully on Thursday at the Groton Regency.

Born August 1, 1918 in Stonington, he was the son of Manuel E. and Frida (Kieburg) Joseph. In his youth, "Charlie" as he was known to his teachers and classmates, loved all kinds of tools and cared for them well. The Broadway Beacon noted "neat and polite, always knows just what is right".

A commercial fisherman, Mr. Jospeh fished out of Stonington along with family members from 1941 through 1956. In 1956, he went to work for Davis-Standard as a machine assembler. The company, later known as Crompton-Knowles was his employer from 1956 until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the Westerly Camera Club in the 1960's. As a member he received numerous awards for his color slides. His love of photography continued throught his lifetime. Other hobbies include an active role in CB radio and devoted many hours to this pastime, particularly in airtime with friends.

Mr. Joseph married Virginia Belle Bogue on September 29, 1939 at the local Methodist parsonage. Besides his wife of 65 years, he leaves two children, Susan J. Briggs of Westerly and Richard L. Joseph of Mystic, 6 grandchildren, Michael Briggs, James Briggs, Karen Wilson, James Joseph, Richard M. Joseph, and Michelle Edwards, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and two sisters, Kathleen McElravy of CA and Mary Donaghy of Fla.

The family invites relatives and friends to join them for a Graveside Funeral Service at Elm Grove Cemtery, Rte. 27, Mystic on Monday at 2pm.The Rev. Doretta M. Colburn will officiate. Visitation is private.
