CHICOPEE – Rita R. (Phaneuf) Durkan, 90, of the Doverbrook Estates in Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. She passed into Eternal Life at Willimansett East in Chicopee surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Ludlow on September 24, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Leo and Loretta (Boisvert) Phaneuf. She was a graduate of Belchertown High School and had lived in Springfield for many years before moving to Chicopee in 2006. She was last employed at the Baystate Gas Company in Springfield for many years and retired as a credit account manager in 1990. An avid golfer, Rita was a member of the Ludlow Country Club. Active in her faith, she was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. She was predeceased by her first husband, Albert Chmura; her second husband, Angelo Frasco; and her third husband, Walter Durkan. She leaves her loving son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. Chmura and his wife, Laurie, of South Hadley; her two cherished granddaughters, Michelle Mallory and her husband, Richard, of South Hadley, and Jane Fitzgibbon and her husband, James Fitzgibbon, III, of Southampton; her two cherished great-grandsons, Wesley Mallory and James Fitzgibbon, IV; her two dear brothers, Roger Phaneuf and his wife, Jeanne, of Belchertown, and Raymond Phaneuf and his wife, Mavis, of Seattle, WA; her dear sister, Janis Altemus of Sacramento, CA; and her many dear nephews and nieces. Besides her parents and her husbands, she was also predeceased by her dear sister and brother-in-law, Anita Roan and her husband, John. Her relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday morning, June 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will be private at the convenience of her family at South Cemetery in Belchertown. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
