SPRINGFIELD – Nicholas J. Koukopoulos, 90, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, May 31, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Clinton, Massachusetts on February 29, 1924, a beloved son of the late John and Angelike (Barbutsi) Koukopoulos. He was raised and schooled in Greece and served for many years as an Officer in Special Forces of the Greek Police. He settled in Springfield around 1953 where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was a life member of AHEPA and a communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anita (Loucas) Koukopoulos who was Called Home on May 1, 1982. He leaves his loving brother and sister-in-law, Leonidas Koukopoulos and his wife, Maria, of Ano Aharne, Greece; his cherished niece, Nicole A. Lipp and her husband, Robert, of Longmeadow; his cherished grandnephew and grandniece, Aaron and Sophia Lipp; and several dear nephews, nieces and family members in Greece. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his loving sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sophie and Trifon Angellas. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, June 6, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. His burial will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Endowment Fund, 22 Saint George Road, Springfield, MA 01104.
