Obituary

George R. Vieira, 91, of New Bedford died May 23, 2014 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility.

He was the husband of the late Agnes R. (Rego) Vieira.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Theresa (deSousa) Vieira, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. He was a graduate of Bristol County Agricultural School.

He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

He was formerly employed as a machine operator at J.C. Rhodes Manufacturing until his retirement.

During World War II, Mr. Vieira served in the U.S. Army with Company C - 747th Tank Battalion, participating in the Invasion of Normandy and the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a recipient of European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the World War II Victory medal and the Good Conduct medal.

Mr. Vieira was a member of American Legion Post 166, Bristol Band Club of Bristol, RI, Horseneck Holy Ghost Society, and a life member of Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento and Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531.

Survivors include two sisters, Clara Neves of Dartmouth, and Mary Ramalho of Barrington, RI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Charles F. Vieira.
His family will receive guests on Wednesday from 9-11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E.
