Obituary

CHICOPEE - Joan A. (Landry) Hammon, 73, of the Willimansett section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, May 22, 2014. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Holyoke on April 24, 1941, a beloved daughter of the late Arthur J. and Thelma (Tanguay) Landry. She was raised on Chapel Street in the Aldenville section of Chicopee where she lived for many years. She graduated in 1959 from Chicopee High School and moved to the Willimansett section of Chicopee in 1963. She was last employed as a sales associate at CVS on South Street in Holyoke and was previously a secretary for several area businesses including the George St. Pierre & Son Funeral Home. Joan especially loved the holidays and always enjoyed cooking a great meal for her family. During her leisure time, Joan enjoyed bingo and was always ready to meet up with her many friends at various bingo games in the area. Joan and her husband, John, enjoyed their summers at the Sunset View Campground in Monson where they made many friends. She was a communicant of the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee. She was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. The greatest joy in her life was being a loving memere to her nine cherished grandchildren. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, John W. Hammon. They were married on July 11, 1959 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. She also leaves her four loving children, Robbin M. Smith and her husband, Dean, of Monson, Mark J. Hammon and his wife, Tina, Wayne R. Hammon and his wife, Ann, and Scott A. Hammon and his wife, Heather, all of Chicopee; her nine cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Justin and Preston Bailey, Cody and Jared Hammon, Jordan Benoit and Austin Hammon, and Charisma, Makayla and Devin Hammon; her dear sister, Diane Bolstridge and her husband, Gerald “Pete” Bolstridge, of Chicopee; her dear brother, Ronald Landry and his wife, Kathy, of Monson; her dear sisters-in-law, Doris Landry of Florida; Nancy Bowman, and Louise Withey and her husband, Ellis, all of New York, and Ann Witherall of Texas; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Hammon and Landry families. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Gilbert Landry; and her brothers-in-law, Alton Bowman, John Witherall and Otto J. Hammon. Joan will also be sadly missed by her devoted canine companion, Carly. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, May 28, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of her family at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
