George L. Robbins Jr., a lifelong resident of Melrose, entered into eternal life on Monday, May 19, 2014 at his home in Melrose following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 82 years old.
George was born in Melrose on December 13, 1931, a son of the late George L. Robbins and Margaret T. (Hurley) Robbins. He grew up in Melrose where he was educated in the Melrose Public School system and graduated from Melrose High School in 1949. George enlisted into the United States Navy on July 20, 1949 and served his country with courage and pride aboard the U.S.S. Princeton during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on April 19, 1953 with the rank of Aviation Boatswainsmate, Airman Fourth Class. George worked for over 30 years as a Turbine Tester at General Electric Company in Lynn. George volunteered his time and compassion to the many veterans at E.N. Rogers Veterans Memorial Hospital in Bedford thru the VNA Hospice Care of Woburn for 19 years and to the many people in area nursing homes who had no family to be there at their final hour of life. He was a longtime member of the Saugus V.F.W. Post # 2346.
George is the beloved husband of the late Elaine E. (Carlson) Robbins. He is the loving longtime companion of Frances Sullivan of Melrose. He is the devoted brother of Frank Robbins of Melrose, Mary Ellen Buckley of Rochester, New Hampshire and Charles Robbins and his wife Cheryl of Lynn. He is also the loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Funeral on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 8:45 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church (corner of Myrtle & Herbert Streets) Melrose at 10 A.M. Burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Visiting hours will be on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
