Obituary

Appling, Ga – Mr. Fred Hiller, 78, beloved husband of 58 years of Marie Wheatley Hiller, entered into rest on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at his home after a long battle with Alzheimers. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Platt's Funeral Home on Belair Road in Evans. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with the Rev. Adam Hildebrand officiating of Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Born in Granite City, IL, he was the son of the late Leonard and Mary Hiller. After graduation from high school, he went to work at Union Starch and Refining Company in Granite City. He joined Monsanto Company just prior to his graduation from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1967. He was transferred to the Augusta Monsanto plant in 1978, where he retired as a Technical Supervisor in 1997. He enjoyed many years coaching his three sons and granddaughter in Little League baseball and softball. He also enjoyed traveling, boating and gardening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Gary (Pam) Hiller, Diana (John) Housley, Dr. James (Wendi) Hiller and Thomas (Jodi) Hiller; his grandchildren Rebecca Lacey, Brian Hiller, Ashley Moore, Stephen Hiller, Chrysta Berry, Amber Thompson, Brad Hiller, Ryan Berry, Claire Hiller, Ava Hiller, Lily Hiller and Dylan Hiller, as well as twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Buryl (Jan) Wheatley, Robert (Janet) Wheatley, Earl “J.R.” (Dolores) Wheatley and Harold Harris, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Hiller Cooper and Winona Hiller Harris.

Pallbearers will be Brian Hiller, Ryan Berry, Keith Moore, Brandon Hough, Cameron Hough and Robert Lacey.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lake Crossing Health Center in Appling for the care and concern shown to Mr. Hiller during his illness.
