Obituary

Georgopoulos, Deamonto “Thelma” (Bakopoulos), 91, of Winthrop entered into rest on May 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Thelma was the beloved wife of the late Charles with whom she shared 45 years of marriage. Born in Lynn, she was the only daughter of the late Anthony and Georgia Bakopoulos. Thelma was predeceased by her brothers Louis and his wife Virginia of Peabody, Dennis of Lynn, and John and his wife Hope of Saugus. Dennis’s wife Stella resides in Andover. Thelma was also a sister-in-law to the late Priscilla and husband Charles Rozantes of Winthrop. Thelma leaves sister-in-law Pauline and husband Charles Chiochios who reside in California. Thelma was the devoted mother to Pauline Maravelias and her husband Peter of Wakefield, Peter Georgopoulos and his wife Susan of Maryland, and Anthony George and his wife Sylvia of Connecticut. She was the cherished grandmother of Andrew Sinclair, Charles Georgopoulos and his fiancée Nina Apostolou, Christopher Georgopoulos and his wife Angela, Paulette Georgopoulos, Steven George and his wife Erin, Peter George, Diana George and her fiancé David Walsh, and Jennifer George. Thelma had many nieces and nephews that she enjoyed and they share many happy memories of her. Thelma enjoyed her early years growing up in West Lynn. Shortly after high school graduation in 1940 with World War II about to start, Thelma started working at General Electric where, during the war, she made parts for submarines. She was a woman of her times. After the war when her boyfriend Charlie came home, they got engaged and married in 1946 like so many others. Soon she and Charlie had three children and it was the fifties. Thelma was a fifties stay-at-home mom which lay the basis for a wonderful foundation for her children’s happiness. Then the sixties came and all her children were at least in junior high school so Thelma went to work. She took a bus and a subway to Boston and joined the insurance business, working for Continental Insurance Company. She started at $55.00 a week and worked so diligently that she was soon promoted to supervisor where she stayed until she retired. After retirement, Thelma and Charlie (Yiayia and Papou) doted on their grandchildren to everyone’s mutual delight. Thelma was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn and the Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. George Greek Orthodox, a duly accredited philanthropic society of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
