Richard A. Matzdorff, 84, of 21 Grove Avenue, Westerly, died Monday morning at Westerly Health Center where he had been a resident since March.
He was born in West Mystic on July 23, 1920 the son of Richard and Louella Barlow Matzdorff. Raised in Mystic, he was a graduate of Stonington high School. After receiving his education, he served in the US Navy during World War II.
Mr. Matzdorff was employed as a meat cutter at Long Hill Supermarket and the former Vallity Department Store for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the Westerly Yacht Club and was a longtime member of the Westerly Elks where he served as a Past Exalted Ruler.
He married Mildred (Bryan) Matzdorff in Westerly in 1951. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Pamela A. Matzdorff of New London; a brother Leonard and his wife Inge Matzdorff of Gales Ferry ; a sister, Eleanor and her husband Robert Frigon of ME. He was predeceased by a son, Richard E. Matzdorff and 3 brothers.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday from 6-8pm. The Westerly Lodge of Elks will conduct at Lodge of Sorrow at 6:30pm. His Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday at 11am at the funeral home with the Rev. Doretta M. Colburn officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
